‘Hexadic II’, was constructed using guitarist Ben Chasny’s (Six Organs of Admittance) unique compositional method called the ‘Hexadic System’. It uses a combination of six note sets (called ‘hexads’) to create melodies. The composer then builds on the ‘hexad’ by adding layers of harmony or accent melodies. What’s unique about this process is that the ‘hexads’ are created by arranging shuffled (random) playing cards in a ‘hexadic’ pattern; almost like a game of musical solitaire. Each card’s value represents a position on the guitar’s neck, which a guitarist can then use to build their composition.
